The Pietra di Bismantova is one of the most iconic symbols of the Appennino Reggiano: a majestic calcisilicic rock plateau that stands isolated among the hills, with vertical walls reaching up to 120 metres. Even mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy (Purgatory, Canto IV), it is a true paradise for climbers and hikers. Trekking to the Summit The classic route to reach the flat top (the "sommo") is a short but rewarding hike, suitable for almost everyone if tackled with proper hiking shoes. Departure: Piazzale Dante (convenient parking, bar/mountain hut, and the ancient Eremo (hermitage) clinging to the rock). Path: CAI 697. Elevation gain: Approximately 170 metres. Ascent time: 25-30 minutes. The trail starts steeply through a forest of downy oaks and hazelnut trees, skirting the spectacular vertical walls used as a natural climbing gym. After an initial section on stone and earth steps, you reach a saddle where you overcome the final rocky leap via a natural staircase assisted by metal handrails (no via ferrata equipment is needed, just watch your step). Once at the top, the scenery changes completely: you will find yourself on an immense, flat grassy plateau suspended in the air, offering a 360-degree view stretching from the Tuscan-Emilian ridge to the Po Valley.
