Perched four kilometres from Serramazzoni and reached via a breathtaking scenic road, the Castello di Monfestino is an imposing, perfectly preserved medieval fortress that overlooks the hamlet of the same name. Originally built as a defensive outpost of the ancient Castro Feroniano to stem the Lombard advance, the complex boasts ancient origins, developing around a primitive square keep. Over the centuries, the structure has been linked to several historic noble families: from the Da Savignano to the Contrari di Ferrara (who enhanced its architecture in the 15th century), through to the Boncompagni and, since 1901, the Corni family, whose dedication saw the fortress expertly restored after a period of decline.
